How To: Getting Rid of the Rust from Your Equipment
Let's face it, the humidity in Singapore ain't funny -- not only the climate is always warm and wet, even the things made of metal here tend to get rusty pretty fast. Equipment like metal or chrome dumbbells, barbells, chains, metal bench, smith machines are no exception.
If metal is bound to rust, is there anything we can do to prevent that from happening? Though it doesn't take a ton of maintenance, fitness equipment of any kind does require some care and an occasional cleaning.
Fitness equipment usually comes in different forms, some made of iron, some are combination of rubber and iron, while others could be chrome, or even comes with urethane coating. Cleaning all of them is easy -- just add a drop or two dishwashing liquid into 1 Litre of water, wet the cloth in it and gently wipe the equipment.
Now, here comes the tricky part: take a new, dry cloth, and wipe the equipment thoroughly and store it in a cool place to avoid excessive moisture. Especially on the grip and knurl, it should be dry because rust tends to build up in the knurl.
If you spot some orange patches around the dumbbell or barbell knurl, that means it's getting rusty, and crispy for sure. Get a bottle of WD-40 and spray a generous amount on the rusty spot; then, leave it for 15 - 20 minutes and scrub the spot with a brass brush. To prevent future rush, coat your equipment with 3-in-1 oil and let it air dry overnight.
Is there anything to avoid? Harsh chemicals such as ammonia, bleach, solvents, lacquer thinners, or acetone should not be used in any cleaning. These liquid might damage your equipment before you could get the rust off.
These tips are great to start in maintaining your equipment in their best form. Regular checking could help prolong the equipment's shelf life. If you have any question regarding the equipment that you bought from us, do not hesitate to contact us!
